“Do I have any sedation options for my treatment?” is a frequently asked question our dentists in Adelaide get all the time. It’s especially common during consultations for complex procedures such as dental implants – and understandably so. Many patients experience dental phobia, anxiety and nervousness where the mere thought of spending time in-chair for a procedure is overwhelming enough.
At Burnside Dental, we want to help ensure our patients receive the care they need at all times. Dental anxiety and fear should not compromise your health, and that’s why we offer sedation options in Adelaide.
Who can get sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry (sleep dentistry) is available to patients of all ages, including children. It may be recommended to patients who:
- Suffer from dental phobia, anxiety or trauma
- Have a strong gag reflex
- Have extremely sensitive teeth
- Need extensive dental treatment
Require surgical procedures such as dental implants, extractions / wisdom tooth extractions or complex cosmetic dentistry that can be more comfortably carried out under IV
Different Types of Sedation Dentistry
There are different types of sedation dentistry to suit patients’ unique needs. A consultation with an experienced dentist prior to receiving any treatment will help determine which is best for you. In Adelaide, the following sedation dentistry options are available at Burnside Dental:
1. Inhalation Sedation
Inhalation Sedation also referred to as Relative Analgesia (RA) involves wearing a light nose piece that is filled with nitrous oxide – more commonly known as happy gas.
Happy gas is an analgesic which means it helps to numb any sense of feeling and the effects are immediate. Happy gas is known to help ease any stress or anxiety you may feel about your visit or procedure.
It tends to wear off quickly and you should be able to drive yourself home following your appointment.
2. IV Sedation
IV Sedation is designed to help you relax and try to make you as comfortable as possible, especially during complex and time-consuming procedures. You will not be unconscious and will be able to respond to verbal cues from your dentist.
At Burnside Dental, this type of sedation is administered by a visiting specialist anaesthetist, who will look after you during the procedure and your recovery period.
Due to the nature of the medications used, you will not be able to drive home yourself, so you will need to arrange for someone to be with you.
