For Your Comfort
We understand that some people find a visit to the dentist a very daunting experience.
You shouldn’t let your fear compromise your oral health. We will take the utmost care to work gently and ensure you feel as comfortable as possible throughout your appointment.
Some procedures are best done under sedation for your own comfort and help us to make the most of your time spent with us.
Sedation is recommended for people who:
- Suffer from dental phobia
- Have a strong gag reflex
- Need extensive dental treatment
- Require surgical procedures that can be more comfortably carried out under IV
In the Burnside Dental Practice, we offer two forms of sedation – Intravenous Sedation and Inhalation Sedation.
Sometimes known as Relative Analgesia (RA), Inhalation Sedation involves wearing a light nose piece which is filled with nitrous oxide, more commonly known as happy gas.
Happy gas is an analgesic, so it helps to numb any feeling and the effects are immediate. Happy gas is known to help ease any stress or anxiety you may feel about your visit or procedure.
It tends to wear off quickly and you should be able to drive yourself home.
IV Sedation is designed to help you relax and try to make you as comfortable as possible, especially during complex and time-consuming procedures. You will not be unconscious and will be able to respond to verbal cues from your dentist.
The sedation is administered by our visiting specialist anaesthetist, who will look after you during the procedure and your recovery period.
Due to nature of the medications used, you will not be able to drive home yourself, so please arrange for someone to be with you.
If you suffer from dental anxiety, please don’t be embarrassed to communicate this to your dentist either when you book your appointment or when you arrive at the practice. We’ll help you to feel as comfortable as possible throughout the process.Call 8364 2557
